Every spring I look forward to the spectacular sky-dances of courting woodcocks; the first pungent skunk-cabbage blooms pushing up through the icy mud; the beautiful high trills of American toads breeding in slow streams and rivers; the fuzzy fronds of cinnamon ferns uncurling in the shade; the astonishing taste of spicebush flowers; the high, sweet songs of migrating solitary vireos. . . these are accompanied by a joy that sustains me throughout the year.
The camp is meant to open the eyes of local children to the marvels of nature all around us, as another Nature Camp opened my eyes and sustained my interest many years ago. Without such an appreciation and sense of awe and wonder of our natural surroundings, concepts of “conservation” and “environment” acquired later in life can easily become dry and self-centered.
