Here and there I spotted ferns still tightly curled up, in a stage called “fiddlehead” because of the similarity to the musical instrument. In the Pacific Northwest, these are considered a delicacy. Tasting like something which is a cross between an artichoke and asparagus, they can be steamed or sauteed with herbs until their delicate flavor reaches its full potential.
In my woodland walk, I saw only cutleaf toothwart blooming in the understory. Where were the other wildflower blooms? Was the low volume just typical of the particular stretch of woods, or had bloom time been delayed throughout the county because of the cold weather?
