When asked if any charges were being placed against Brown, Luke said, "The matter is under investigation. He hasn't been charged." ^ Brown could not be reached for comment. His newlyretained attorney, Douglas Baumgardner, said, "I have only recently been asked to look into this matter on Mr. Brown's behalf. I don't feel comfortable commenting without authorization from him."
In Mills' case, his opponent for the Jackson School Board seat, Ron Makela, was the person who raised questions about Mills' petition to the Registrar's Office. This came after Makela asked someone to sign one of his petitions and the person replied he thought he had signed it at Hackley's Store.
"I don't fault him (Makela) even though his motives may be impure," said Mills. "He is a man of detail and he asked to see the petition.
"No matter his motives, it doesn't make what I did right."
Asked to comment on Mills, Makela said, "It basically is an unfortunate situation. Wes works very hard and has been dedicated to his job. I haven’t always agreed with his decisions. I respect him. He made a mistake and overlooked a very important part of the petition process."
