computers and the Internet, I planned a trip to western Ireland to trace ancestors. I subscribed for a year to an Irish newspaper that covered my destination of Millstreet, County Cork. I took many notes and organized things in a white, three-ring binder. I even tape-recorded articles and partially memorized them while walking my dog.
Unfortunately, when I arrived in Millstreet I knew more about what had been going in the town than most of the people I met. I was taken around the town to various pubs, almost as an exhibit (“...aye, Donnie, tell us a story from yer white book....”)
The locals marveled that I knew about things such as the old ceramic mug in the local museum that had a large black fly molded in the bottom, a surprise to the drinker after quaffing the last contents.
Get a life? What better life than retelling old newspaper stories in a quaint Irish pub for free Guinness?
