The size of the table is important. In places like Starbuck’s, the tables are tiny. There is no room for your coffee or pastry. If you open the newspaper flat, a page or section falls to the floor. And the background music is too loud or raucous. For proper newspaper reading, you need some quiet. On occasion, I’ve read a newspaper in a McDonald’s or Burger King: all too loud, especially if they have a play area for small children, who tend to shriek a lot.
