As Headwaters begins its seventh year serving the educational community in Rappahannock, it is focusing intently on one of its more challenging goals: growing the Headwaters Endowment Fund.

However, endowment money is notoriously hard to raise, and while Headwaters has raised over $50,000 in endowment funds in the past, progress has been slow. If a substantial endowment can be established, it will serve as a solid financial foundation for Headwaters, allowing donations to go directly to projects and programs.

Happily, help for the endowment arrived several months ago. Headwaters was approached by an anonymous donor with the opportunity to take part in an Endowment Challenge Grant. For every $2 Headwaters raises for endowment over the next three years, the anonymous donor will give $1.

Headwaters leaped at the chance to complete the challenge. And they turned to someone they knew could help them meet the challenge, the late Dr. Werner Krebser.

Dr. Krebser had served as chairman of the Headwaters Endowment Committee until failing health forced his resignation. Although he could no longer serve on the committee, growing the Endowment Fund was a project that was near and dear to his heart. When the endowment committee asked if they could name the new Endowment Challenge after him, he graciously said yes.

The Krebser Endowment Challenge goal is to raise $90,000 over three years. For every $20,000 Headwaters raises, the anonymous donor will provide an additional $10,000.

The Endowment Committee reports that it is already half way along the road to reaching its goal, thanks to the donations and pledges of many generous county residents who have chosen the endowment as a way to honor the memory of Dr. Krebser.
