Mayor William F. Moffett Jr., was one of the six mayors of American towns named Washington, who was a guest of the National Capital Sesquicentennial Commission in Washington, D.C., July 19. These six mayors are heads of towns ranging in population from 507 to 5,880. Mayor Moffett was asked (by a reporter for The Washington Post), "What does a mayor of a town with a population of about 500 do?" Mayor Moffett answered, ". . .You try to get the streets mowed off." A black mountain rattlesnake which was caught Sunday is on display at the Moore and Payne Motors at Washington. The snake measures 2 and a half feet in length and four inches around and has six rattles. The snake was found in a blackberry patch on the Ernest Smoot farm in Harris Hollow by Loring Anderson. A large crowd of people from various parts of the county and many outsiders attended the public auction of some of the personal property of Mrs. Lillie M. Lillard held Saturday at the J. W. Critzer service .station in Washington. An unusually large collection of fine tools attracted men buyers. The ladies, as usual, enjoyed the sale of household articles.
