There were no reports of property damage or injuries, according to Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz. According to the Richter scale, a 2 indicates the smallest earthquake that can be felt; a 4.5, which was the current one, is an earthquake causing slight damage; and an 8.5 is a very devastating earthquake. “The floor started to shake, then the walls, then the dog howled. I watched this plant dance all over the table,” said Dr. Carole Hertz, a counseling psychologist, who lives near Flint Hill. Hertz said her house started to tremble about 4 p.m. She said she knew it was an earthquake since she experienced them while living in San Francisco. “I was working in my garage when the building started shaking,” said Clyde Humphrey of West Wind Farm in Castleton. “Two chickens in a cage jumped down from their roost. “The shaking lasted only three or four seconds, then all was quiet for about 10 seconds. Then there was a second period of shaking that lasted two or three seconds. I could see the garage doors and windows shake.” Humphrey said he went outside to check for snow sliding off the roof and none had. Soon after the 3:59 p.m. earthquake was felt in Rappahannock, Humphrey and others quickly posted reports of what they had experienced on Rappnet, the county's email system, as members of the community tried to learn from each other just what had happened. “We sure felt it here at the Conyers House on Slate Mills Road,” wrote Sandra Cartwright-Brown. “This four-story old house shook and shook.” One Boston resident said he thought the rattling of his windows was from a low-flying helicopter See QUAKE, Page A8 66 When the building started shaking, two chickens jumped down from their roost. Clyde Humphrey West Wind Farm Castleton Deer put motorists in peril Number of roadway deer triples in one year By Mary Ann Kuhn Rappahannock News Staff Writer When Lindsay Walker talks about the number of deer being killed on Rappahannock's highways and byways, he has numbers to back up what anyone who drives these roads has been seeing this season. In the last 11 and a half months, the Virginia Department of Transportation has picked up 201 deer from ‘ Rappahannock's roadways compared to only 64 in 2002. “This is a significant increase in the number of deer being killed on the roadways in Rappahannock,” said Walker, who is the assistant resident engineer for maintenance for the county. The total deer population had gone up during the past decade, state wildlife officials say. Talk to motorists like Phil Irwin of Flint Hill about deer and he can tell stories from his experience that would make anyone think twice about venturing out on county roads in the evening. “Deer have hit me six times-I have not hit them, they have hit me-in the 40 years I have lived here,” says Irwin, who owns Caledonia Farm Bed & Breakfast. He said he was hit four times on Route 211 and twice on Fodderstack Road. State officials say there are more deer here today than when settlers first arrived 400 years ago. deer, it’s been after dark. “Every time I go out at night I see deer,” he said. The last time a deer ran into his car was last year. The damage then? “The only thing they knocked off was my deer whistle,” said Irwin. One year, though, his car was “almost totaled” and he suffered a sore shoulder from being hit by a deer, he said. Officials say there really is no strategy for drivers surprised by a deer in the road. Often drivers swerve to avoid the deer, running the risk of hitting a guardrail, tree or embankment which can be fatal. Virginia State Police say this year there have been five reported accidents in Rappahannock where people were avoiding animals and one of these involved a person who was injured. The reports don't specify the type of animal involved in these accidents and they only list accidents where damage was $1,000 or more. Last year, of the seven reported animal-related accident, four involved injuries to motorists in Rappahannock. As development builds up, deer adapt, while their natural predators disappear. Add protected sanctuaries and the problem gets worse. In addition, Lovelace said, regulations restrict when deer can be hunted and which ones can be hunted. Meanwhile, one frustrated board member, Sharon Kilpatrick, walked out of the meeting over not being allowed to read a letter about the controversial ‘Men of Rappahannock County’ calendar. This flu is no joke—get a shot while you can By Carol Larson Special to the Rappahannock News The flu season is here, earlier than usual, and this first variety of flu is a pretty mean one. There are many strains of influenza, and it is likely there will be a variety of kinds of flu as the season progresses. Have you gotten your flu shot? It isn’t too late because the flu season usually lasts through April, but remember that when you get the shot, it can take two to three weeks to take effect. The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District of the Virginia Department of Health continues to offer flu shots for $15 and pneumonia shots for $20. You may get these shots on Dec. 16 from 911 a m. at the Rappahannock County Health Department on Main Street in Washington. The Virginia Department of Health encourages people to speak with their physicians about whether to have a flu shot. There are reasons that some people should not get one, including these: • You should not have a flu shot if you are allergic to eggs, which are used in making the vaccine. • You should not have a flu shot if you have a high fever. • You should not have a flu shot if you have had a severe reaction to a flu vaccine in the past. Officials do recommend flu shots especially for those people at most risk for getting the flu. They include: • Anyone who is 50 years of age and older. • Children between the ages of six months and 23 months old. • Nursing home residents. • Women who are more than three months pregnant. • People with chronic medical conditions (chronic meaning ongoing diseases such as diabetes or COPD). • People working in the field of healthcare who are in close contact with young, elderly or ill people. If you or a family member does get the flu, you can help prevent spreading it. These are things we read about every year, see on television and hear on the radio—and they really work. The catch? You have to do them. • Wash hands thoroughly (sing the Happy Birthday song or count 30 seconds duration) and wash more often than usual. Germs on hands are easily spread. If you don’t have access to soap and water, use hand wipes or hand washing gels (also good for kids to have at school). • Avoid close contact with people who are sick • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue every time you cough or sneeze. Then throw that tissue away. Wash your hands after you cough or sneeze. • Get plenty of sleep, exercise and eat well-balanced meals, all things that help keep your immune system strong. • If you get the flu, stay home. You may be contagious for up to five days. When children are ill, keep them home from school or daycare so they do not spread germs to others. It is important to remember that antibiotics do not work on the flu because it is a virus, though your physician may prescribe some antiviral drugs that can help. Antibiotics work on illnesses caused by bacteria, and you may develop secondary bacterial illnesses with your flu such as ear or sinus infections. If you have questions about whether to get a flu shot or how to take care of yourself when you or a family member has the flu—or if you want to get a flu shot—contact your physician. Hearthstone School holds weekend events By Amy Silver Special to the Rappahannock News Hearthstone School’s Christmas Bazaar has been rescheduled to Saturday, Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the school, two miles west of Sperryville on Route 211. Hearthstone is a nonprofit, arts-based cooperative school. The bazaar will feature craft items made by students, parents and local artisans, including handmade wreaths and swags, Pellegata photography, Christmas ornaments, handmade greeting cards, beeswax candles, hand-dyed knitting wools, pottery, lavender-scented neck warmers, jewelry, handmade baskets and art and wheat straw house blessings. There will be plenty of children’s toys from Hearthsong, books and a hand-decorated Gingerbread House Raffle. Join in for soup, sandwiches, baked goodies, cider, hot chocolate and delicious freshly-brewed coffee donated by Central Coffee Roasters. Evening under the skies To celebrate the beginning of the winter sky-gazing season, Hearthstone School will hold an astronomy evening on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the school at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome. The speaker is Francois-Marie Patomi, an amateur astronomer from Rappahannock County. Called “An Evening under Rappahannock Skies: Viewing the Moon, the Rings of Saturn Mars and the Stars,” the event will start indoors with a presentation and discussion supported by visual aids, posters, displays and games about the moon, the planets and the universe. If the sky is clear, attendees will go outdoors and look at the sky through telescopes and giant binoculars. There will be hands-on help to find the way in the dark, look through the instruments and explain what is being seen. While waiting for Saturn to rise in the sky above the tree line, gazers will get close views of the moon, its craters and mountains, and see the planet Mars still very bright in the sky. If there is bad weather, the group will try again the next day, Sunday, and equipment will be set up again on the school's grounds for everyone to enjoy. Obituaries James P. Jamieson Sperryville resident James P. Jamieson, 97, died Dec. 8 at his Sperryville country estate. Mr. Jamieson was horn April, 30, 1906 in Chicago, 111. He was the first born of eight children to John and Mary Jamieson. His three sisters, Peggy Weber, Theresa Moore and Ellen Jamieson, and three of his four brothers, John, Donald and Jerome Jamieson preceded him in death. His youngest brother, Emmett, lives in Dallas, Texas. James “Jamie” Jamieson spent his formative years in Chicago. After early schooling there, he graduated from De Paul University, and later from law school. He began his business career at an early age in the investment business as an office trainee. He progressed rapidly to become a trader in stocks and bonds in his early twenties. His world changed in 1943 James P. Jamieson when he volunteered to join the U. S. Army. His life was enriched by his accomplishments in service to his country. He earned the Bronze Star expediting the security of almost one billion dollars worth of cash and art which had been hidden in caves bank vaults by Nazi authorities. Mr. Jamieson was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Chief of Banking for the Allied Forces in occupied zones. His responsibilities included re-establishing currency for distribution and use throughout the occupied zone. Mr. Jamieson spent his entire business life in the municipal bond business. He was the originator of the concept of marketing bond issues through municipalities to be used in highway construction, toll roads and bridges in dollar magnitude never before experienced. One outstanding issue of over 400 million was the Illinois Toll Road; another issue was for building O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. There were many others accomplished by the use of his finance plan. Mr. Jamieson’s vision for America was “Four lane highways criss-crossing our vast country for all people to use.” Mr. Jamieson is survived by his wife, Mary Jamieson. He met Mary Randolph Matteson in 1947, and in 1948, they were married in Chicago. They later moved to Sperryville where Mrs. Jamieson still resides at their country estate, “#1 High Thicket.” They shared their love with each other for over 55 years. He is also survived by his brother, Emmett, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Jamieson’s spirit, his sense of humor, his basic common sense were all appreciated by those who knew and loved him. This recent incident is typical of what seems to be happening more and more often: On Monday night, a young woman returning from work after dark reaches the bottom of a hill, just in sight of her home. From out of nowhere, there is a flash of brown and white as a deer plunges across the road in front of her. There's no time to hit the brakes. Fortunately, she is only going about 35 mph, but there is a shuddering impact as the bumper, grille and hood hit the deer. As the force spins the animal in front of the car, it takes out the left front fender as well. In a split second it s over, bhe stops the car, but the deer is nowhere in sight. Shaken, she drives the rest of the way home, tearfully relating the incident to her husband. It could have been so much worse, he tells her. The damage can be fixed, and she wasn’t hurt. Take it easy, it's over. Not quite. The next day, as he heads to work, her husband sees the injured deer half-standing in a creek bed below the road. It’s just a baby, he notes. Upset over this aspect of the accident, he calls his father, who lives nearby, asking what to do. The animal is clearly suffering. Animal control is called and the situation is explained to a sympathetic dispatcher. A deputy sheriff quickly arrives in the area, and with the help of the father, locates the deer. It has dragged itself away from the road, and is sitting upright behind a board fence, its back to the men. It's looking around, frightened and in pain. What happens next is up to the officer, so the family member gratefully departs. Minutes later, as he examines his daughter-inlaw's damaged vehicle, a gunshot rings out, echoing through the neighborhood. Now, it's really over. Or is it? Letters RAAC thanks community for its support Last weekend started off with a snowed-out Friday and a prediction of a blizzard on Saturday hut the Rappahannock County community hung in there for some of the events held during “A Christmas in Little Washington” sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community (RAAC). It certainly wasn’t stroll around town weather hut the Ki Theatre’s “The Shepherds’ Play” was sold out both Saturday and Sunday. What a treat for those of us lucky enough to get a seat. Saturday was busy with a great turnout for the pre-theatre reception with harpist John Kovac at Robert and Joannie Ballard’s shop on Main Street. Guests ventured on to either the play or the near sell out jazz concert at The Theatre in Little Washington. Chef Patrick O’Connell of the Inn at Little Washington was also the “Show Goes On” star of the sold-out cooking classes which were held on Sunday. During one of the busiest weekends for the chef and his staff, the classes were generously held to benefit RAAC. Proceeds will make it possible to develop a full program of events for the arts in the community. Hopefully this coming weekend everyone can support the Hearthstone Christmas Bazaar postponed and moved to its school and the Washington Baptist Church “Christmas Dinner” rescheduled for this coming Saturday. Thanks to everyone. Claudia Mitchell Washington A taxing time at the tax office Taxes were due on Friday, Dec. 5 but because of an unexpectedly large snowstorm I was unable to get to the tax office. First thing Monday morning, Dec. 8, ! visited the tax office to clear my bill and was hit with a $261.84 penalty which I strongly protested because of weather conditions on the 5th. Our treasurer Frances Foster proudly announced,"! was here on the 5th.” Of course, she lives around the comer and thanks to our hard-working road crews, they made her few steps to the office possible, unlike my 300 foot driveway which was impossible to transverse. Even the UPS did not venture with a huge truck. Her statement that notices were sent out in October bears no relation to the fact they are not due till Dec. 5 (weather permitting). Had I been able to mail it on Dec. 5, she still would not have received it until the morning of the 8th when I presented it in person. I love this town and its warm friendly and under standing people. It’s a town with a heart. It is said that a little power can he dangerous, and in my opinion can he worn like a pompous mantle of royalty when one runs for office continuously unopposed. Edmund Kavanagh Washington PS. Even the IRS allows for inclement weather. ‘An act of kindness’ On Friday, Dec. 5 after the snow stopped I took my shovel and shoveled around my car until I could get it on the pavement. Saturday afternoon I decided to “take ofF to do some errands. Later when I returned, to my amazement, my entire parking area was plowed. 1 do not know to whom I need to thank. I hope the kind and thoughtful person will read this. I am deeply appreciative and my fervent wish that an act of kindness returns to you Dorothy B. Hawkins Washington An opportunity for better understanding As we savor the memory of the special moments of our Thanksgiving celebrations and begin to hear holiday music piped into every store we visit, we realize that Christmas is right around the comer. For many of us, it will be an exciting time as we have time to spend with our families and friends exchanging gifts and good cheer. For many others it will be just another day worrying about the safety of loved ones in far off lands or worrying about from where the next meal will appear. The Forum David Plank In our .schools, I am gratified that we try to focus throughout the year on those who face extraordinary challenges and we are successful in raising awareness among our children. Perhaps we do not do enough to encourage adults to understand and embrace the joy of giving. As our Director of Guidance, who teaches a Psychology class for us, notes in a recent article from the School bulletin, “It’s particularly sad, I think, when I hear young people say, They should go out and get jobs’ about 16-year-olds in foster care. Or, ‘My parents work hard for their money, so why should we share? when discussing families at the local homeless shelter. T’m not upset — teenagers are notoriously self-centered, and really not mature enough in many cases to comprehend the larger issues — I’m just sorry that they're missing the joy of selfless giving, the expansion of the spirit that is our reward for sharing what we have with others. “These are things that can’t be purchased, that we can’t wrap up and present to our children, at least not in the conventional way.” But we can present our kids with opportunities to discover these gifts for themselves. We can open conversations and create situations where our children are able to explore the nature of giving, the concept of enough, the connectedness of one human being to another, the compassion that defines our species. We can prompt, mold, guide and nurture the part of each child that understands that inner joy far outshines outer wealth, and lasts much longer. Students talked in class today about the glass-half-empty, glass-half-full conundrum. And as so often happens, from the mouths of babes — or at least front'the mouth of a very sensible 15-year-old — came the answer: “The glass is twice as big as it needs to be." Let us be guided to teach out children that in so many instances, less is more, enough is enough, and giving is blessed. So, it is an opportunity for us as parents to help our young people grasp the significant benefits that opening our hearts and wallets can provide, and he reminded that every small kindness is returned a thousand fold. The Sunday hunting ban ia a remnant of Virginia's outdated (and no longer existing) Blue Laws. These laws banned virtually all forma of recreation on Sunday. Today, hunting is the only recreational activity that is still outlawed on Sunday. The Sunday hunting ban was established at least as early as 1887, and it is obvious that Virginian’s live differently today than they did over 100 years ago. S At the time thexian was established, Virginia was primarily an agricultural state, and farmers hunted during the week to provide sustenance. Thus, Sunday was declared off limits to hunting, and as a uniform day of rest for game species. Today, Virginia is a far different place than it was during the Reconstruction period It has become a world technology center, hosting over 5,000 technology companies. A vast majority of Virginians today work full-time jobs, and many commute long distances and put in long hours. The average sportsman’s free time exists only during weekends, and with Sunday a “no hunting day,” that leaves one day a week to enjoy their sport The ban is not only unfair to' many of Virginia’s sportsmen, but also prejudicial Commercial game preserves are now allowed to hunt seven days a week, and many Virginians simply cannot afford to i pay $90 or more to hunt half-aday on a commercial preserve. Virginia is one of only seven states that still ban hunting on Sunday. Of those seven states, two have pending legislation to eliminate or drastically reduce the ban. If 43 other states can allow Sunday hunting without a problem, then why would it create so many problems for Virginia? Queen Noor is the widow of the late King Hussein of Jordan who made peace in the Middle East his never-ending quest during his long reign. Over 160 men, women and children came and braved the sometimes-treacherous roads to help raise funds for this popular day school near Flint Hill. The parking lot and , adjacent street areas were full of cars. This year’s event, the school’s Second Annual Art Show and Auction, had an abundance of high quality work on display, tempting personal collectors as well as those looking for an appropriate Christmas gift. The exhibit’s theme was “Art From the Heart,” suggesting that each of the artists submitted works they most loved to create. “Purchases made at the auction contributed in a significant way to enhancing the high quality programs and training that the private Wakefield Country Day School is able to offer its students and faculty,” said the event’s chairperson, Alaina LoveCugnon.
