Deer story
It seems that just about everyone living around
here has a "deer story" and nearly all involve the
widespread and potentially tragic conflict between deer and automobiles (See story on page Al).
This recent incident is typical of what seems to be happening more and more often:
On Monday night, a young woman returning from work after dark reaches the bottom of a hill, just in sight of her home. From out of nowhere, there is a flash of brown and white as a deer plunges across the road in front of her.
There's no time to hit the brakes. Fortunately, she is only going about 35 mph, but there is a shuddering impact as the bumper, grille and hood hit the deer. As the force spins the animal in front of the car, it takes out the left front fender as well.
