THE FLAG-DRAPED
CASKET During a military funeral, one of the most enduring images is that of the flagdraped coffin. This custom, which began during the Napoleonic Wars, was accorded to the dead who were carried from the battlefield on a caisson. According to this country’s custom, when the U.S. flag covers a casket, it is placed so that the union blue field is at the head and over the left shoulder. It is not placed in the grave, nor is it ever allowed to touch the ground. The flag is presented to the next of kin at the end of the funeral.
