“Every time I go out at night I see deer,” he said.
The last time a deer ran into his car was last year. The damage then?
“The only thing they knocked off was my deer whistle,” said Irwin.
One year, though, his car was “almost totaled” and he suffered a sore shoulder from being hit by a deer, he said.
Officials say there really is no strategy for drivers surprised by a deer in the road.
Often drivers swerve to avoid the deer, running the risk of hitting a guardrail, tree or embankment which can be fatal.
Virginia State Police say this year there have been five reported accidents in Rappahannock where people were avoiding animals and one of these involved a person who was injured.
The reports don't specify the type of animal involved in these accidents and they only list accidents where damage was $1,000 or more.
Last year, of the seven reported animal-related accident, four involved injuries to motorists in Rappahannock.
