This has put Fowler and, by association with this issue, Sheriff Larry Sherertz, in a kind of limbo that only a new study tan help to dispel.
After the study last year, the sheriff was left to enforce speeding along Main Street. “We worked radar in town here and that is not something that has been done traditionally by my predecessors,” said Sheriff Sherertz. His deputies wrote up “a number of tickets, a bunch, and we made an impression on speeders.”
But at the peak hours of morning and afternoon, Sherertz says, his traffic enforcement deputies are obliged to cover the roads for school children, which leaves the Fowler’s stretch of Main Street uncovered.
Fowler admits, “The situation improved” with the sheriff’s enforcement efforts, until the enforcement “reverted” to what it was before, and the speeding continued.
“The issue is, ‘Is there a hazardous condition?’ The nature of the complaint is that there is a hazardous condition, and we want to prevent anything from happening,”says Fowler.
Sadly, none of this gives confidence to the parents of a young child. .The mayor says that everybody has an obligation to help the speeding situation. He understands the feelings behind the Fowler’s complaints, and has acted on their behalf. Yet, he adds reasonably, “On the other hand, he’s got a big back yard.”
The VDOT study is expected to show- results in two to three weeks after it is conducted. VDOT officials would not announce the time schedule for the study for fear of skewing the results.
