Bills include the maintenance of Slack’s two sons, Jeremy, 22, a student at the University of Arizona, and Daniel, 18, who recently graduated from high school in Pittsburgh, where he lives with his mother, Laurie Marshall.
“I’ve been making art for 30 years,” Slack says. “I have to take care of my family and make art where I can. I follow my own path.”
Surprise party
Two days before his flight to London, he was given a surprise party in Little Washington hosted by his neighbors Brandon and Sarah Fowler. In order to get Slack to attend at all, the Fowlers lured him, telephoning that there was a snake in their baby’s bedroom. Slack rushed over with a rake in his hand, and looked stricken when he saw 35 guests waiting to congratulate him.
“It’s a big deal,” said Brandon Fowler of the Royal Academy selection. “It’s a life event.”
Before leaving for London with Robin Purnell as his traveling companion, patron, and guide, Slack took a moment to appreciate what Rappahannock has given to him.
“The community has extended their support,” he says. “There are many others who are equally deserving of this honor, but I am moved by people’s care.”
