After losing control of his motorcycle around a tight turn, Dolan ran off the right shoulder of the road and struck a guard rail. He. was thrown down a wooded embankment.
State Trooper C.L. Jenkins came on the scene and alerted the Luray Fire and Rescue Department,' which in turn called for helicopter evacuation. Dolan was flown by Pegasus helicopter to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment.
“On that stretch of road, there is no forgiveness, and there is no room for error,” Sgt. Settle said.
In an effort to end weekend fatalities and accidents, police and VDOT recently posted new signs, reducing the speed limit from 55 miles per hour to 45 on Route 211 over Thornton Gap in hopes motorcyclists would drive slower. They also set up road checks to examine motorists’ licenses at the base of the mountain stretch and assigned troopers to ride up and down the mountain to slow down motorcyclists.
