The couple looked for property in the Blue Ridge area, and when Mrs. Grove told her great uncle Raymond that they had found a place which suited them in Culpeper, he asked her, “Darlin’, are you all buyin’ a farm or buyin’ an idea?”
She smiles now. “We bought an idea.”
It was the old Berry Place on Route 522 in Woodville. They had heard it was for sale while shopping one day in the Sunnyside Market in Sperryville. They looked it over with some trepidation. Abandoned, the house had not been lived in for 40 years. Built in parts, the house dates from the 1700s, 1815, and 1885.
“It was the proverbial abandoned ghost house. It was wonderful, but there was no way we could buy it,” she said.
