Brazilian soccer game
On Saturday, Aug. 14, a Brazilian soccer team will conduct a soccer clinic at 9:30 a.m. and will participate in an exhibition game against local talent at 7 p.m. on the Rappahannock County Elementary School soccer field. Some of the players have been on national and world championship teams from Brazil. The clinic and game are open to all ages five to 17 and there is no charge. These events are sponsored by the Shiloh Baptist Association in conjunction with the Baptist General Association of Virginia. A covered dish picnic supper will begin at 5 p.m. at the County Recreational Park Pavilion on Route 211 with the team members and everyone is invited. An R. S. V. Celebration of the Tomato
ECOW will hold its third annual Celebration of the Tomato on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be over 20 different types of tomatoes — heirloom varieties, assorted cherry tomatoes and lots more. Mike Koch from FireFly Farms of Bittinger, Md., producers of incredible goat cheeses, will provide samples of their cheeses and pair them with different flavors of tomatoes and wines from around the world. There also will be a sampling of tomato ice cream. A special treat will be the natural and gourmet dog biscuits from Bite Me. Civil War group to meet
National Park Service historian Greg Mertz will be the guest speaker on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at the Blue Ridge Civil War Roundtable. The meeting at the Rappahannock Library is open to members and non-members who share an interest in history and the Civil War. Mertz’s talk will be an overview of the Battle of Gettysburg and the significance of the battle to the Union and the Confederacy. Mertz is one of the historians at the Fredericksburg National Military Park. Doors open qt 7 p.m. and the program starts at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call Gary Wilson, 540-547-4106.

The sixth annual “Taste of Rappahannock” is Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Belle Meade Schoolhouse in Sperryville.
