A special word of thanks, however, is due Ben Atkins and his wife, Becky. Ben has served as the Relay for Life coordinator for Rappahannock County since 2001 and Becky has worked beside him all the way.
The first Relay for Life event in Rappahannock County took place in May of 1999 and Ester Settle was our first coordinator. She teamed up with Ben Atkins as Co-Chairpersons of the event in 2000 and during their time of service through this year’s event they have helped lead our county to raise over $320,000 for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. We are grateful to them and to all the citizens of Rappahannock County for their wonderful support.
At the follow-up meeting of this year’s Relay for Life committee on June 22, Ben was asked why he has given so much of himself to this project and he said, “I lost my father to cancer. My mom was a cancer survivor before she passed away with heart failure. My wife lost a grandfather and grandmother to cancer. I have
