Fern Springs Farm
The final house of the 2004 House Tour is Fern Springs Farm, home of Emerson and Helen Williams, an old log cabin built just after the Civil War. Its simple form, nestled under an enormous oak tree, and anchored on a large rock represents the plain and simple country life in Rappahannock County.
A wide-roofed porch shades the 10-inch thick doorway to the two original rooms, which display the log cabin structure with wide hand-cut unfinished ceiling joists, small deep set windows and an interior wood paneled wall. Two comer cupboards filled with Waterford crystal, collections of pewter and blue and white china, and many paintings and etchings fill the room.
The old kitchen, now a sort of study, features books stacked to the ceiling and baskets hanging from the beams. Upstairs are two bedrooms, with the original staircase sandwiched between the joists. Both rooms show the
