A recent studio sale by Washington portrait artist Robin Barker Purnell provided an opportunity to spend some time with an acclaimed artist who has made Washington, Virginia her home for the last 20 years. In between, she has lived in such far-flung places as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Liberia, Vienna, and Khazakhstan.
Purnell has made many stark transitions in her life, from riding horseback across the desolate and windswept plains of Khazakhstan and recording the faces of the nomadic peoples, to entertaining in glittering style as the wife of a U.S. diplomat in sophisticated cities like Vienna and St. Petersburg.
Now finally back home for good — with both the husband and the diplomatic obligations things of the past — Purnell has settled herself back into her handsome farmhouse in Washington. She is very happy to finally be in the place that she loves the best.
