Purnell has also managed to give each of her subjects a gaze — unique to each of them — that almost makes one feel the presence of each of these souls.
There is ample evidence of a study of the Old Masters in her work: Van Eyck, Holbein, and Vermeer along with a dash of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
Also evident is the influence of the surrealists and Russian icons. All of these influences are woven together with an awesome technical talent and with a seemingly alchemical process that distills the essence of her subjects onto canvas.
Self-taught
Purnell began painting at the age of four and although she did graduate from Massachusetts College of Art in 1975 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting, she considers herself basically self-taught.
