It is the Amissville Community Christmas, and it has been going on for some forty years.
Those in at the very beginning, including Dorothy Hackley, Charles Priest and Nelson Burner - to name just a few - aren’t sure exactly what year it started. They do remember that there were people in the area who did not have much more than a few potatoes for Christmas. They do remember that Priest and Burner and others in the Ruritan asked Dorothy Hackley if she and her husband, the late Graham Hackley, could prepare some food baskets. The Hackleys did, and sold them at a discount.
