Christmas decorations in the Town of Washington were spectacular this year showing much originality and effort. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Buntin’s spot-lighted door decorated by their daughter, Nancy, featuring an angel done in gold, silver, and blue metallic paper on a red background won first place in the judging. Second place went to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Burke who featured a topiary tree by their door, and third prize went to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bailey Jr. for a Santa Claus lighted by blinking lights. Credit was given by each of the three top winners to the children of their household for giving much aid, assistance, and urging toward creating the winning effect.
Luther Payne of Washington bagged a 305 lb. black bear Christmas Eve morning in the orchard of John Marshall Clark in Gid Brown Hollow. With him was his son Franklin Payne of Rixeyville. Mr Payne was half through skinning the animal before a photographer happened by, so the “bare bear” was redressed for a photograph.
