At the time the TimesDemocrat went to press last Tuesday night, it was believed a rocket attack by insurgents was the cause of an explosion in a mess hall tent at Forward Operating Base Marez, near Mosul, Iraq on Dec. 21 that killed 22 people, including 14 U.S. soldiers, and wounded many more.
An investigation has since revealed that the blast was actually caused by a suicide bomber who entered the tent wearing an explosive device, which contained ball bearings as shrapnel, and set off the blast.
Sgt. Evan Byler, 26, of Catlett, was in the tent when the bomb went off. He was knocked to the floor but escaped injury, and took an active role in the rescue effort that followed.
Byler is a member of the 276th Engineer Battalion, Virginia Army National Guard.
