America at the time was towards abstraction and personal expression, and the idea that classical training should form a basis for life as a creative artist was considered no longer valid by many.
After studying in Greece with Greek painter Aristotle Solounias, Purnell became convinced that a foundation in classical techniques and classical study was a necessity.
Then began her long journey of inquiry through visits to museums, personal study, and an exploration of the techniques of the Old Masters.
