mistreat, or exploit Y or Z is an ever-present fact of the human condition. Just as wars to end all wars never do, so too social conflicts of one form or another sadly, never really cease. Injustice, inequality, and ignorance and their corollaries seem to constantly morph, ‘Terminator’like into new or recycled forms. But as in Shel Silverstein’s lyrics there is a message in all this. In the famous Christmas truce of World War I, the opponents, not the ‘ones calling the shots’ but the ordinary grunts in the trenches who were called upon to kill one another, put down their weapons, exchanged sweets and greetings, and even played moonlit soccer games. When the truce concluded, they all wondered what they were fighting for and whose family was in their gun sights. It is one of the persistent contradictions in all the human experience.
