Track season will start at the high school in a few months and once again the athletes will be literally kicking up dust. Plans for the new track have been in the works for several years now and have seemingly digressed in the face of rising construction costs and other needs at the school. Management of this project also seems to change running shoes from the School Board to the Board of Supervisors with heavy input from Superintendent Chappell and County Administrator John McCarthy. In the meantime, there is little progress. But one chunk of money and what happens to it may put even more pressure on the powers that be to look for a quick solution. The Ann Spieker Track Foundation has a little over $50,000 originally earmarked for the new track. The foundation, started in 2004, also had a two-year stipulation that if construction didn’t begin that the funds could be called into question. The two-year mark is about up and the money is still there but a decision isn’t. What a shame. While there are certainly many good causes that the money could be re-directed to, the initial purpose to build a new track is more viable than ever and should happen as originally intended. There is a lot of rumbling in county circles about just how this project should have been handled but finger pointing doesn’t get the track built or even started. Whether these young athletes run on asphalt or a more superior rubberized surface seems a mute point - they need to be running on something other than what is there now - which isn’t much. The fields in the middle serve both the soccer teams and the football teams. Those fields need better drainage systems. It would also be nice to see at night - those fields could be lite. And what about seating - bleachers would be lovely as well. If the combined coffers of the school funds and the county budget won’t allow for the track to move forward in an expeditious manner, then the baton will pass to the community at large. Perhaps the threat of losing even more money to the track treasury will prompt all those involved to act. Just do it.
