Phil Irwin sits in the coziness of his dining room at Caledonia Farm with a cup of 1812 coffee nearby.
Outside his windows, there are a host of little birds fluttering about a bird feeder. They are only a small indication of the wide variety of bird life that have found homes on Irwin’s spread of over 100 acres which is listed on the National Register of Historic places.
They are not only a sign of spring but a delightful reminder to Irwin that his land situated on the lower slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is now a part of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries network of birding and wildlife trails.
Divided into three phases, Caledonia Farm is included in the ‘Mountain Phase,’ the other two being the Piedmont Phase and the Coastal Area.
