Irwin is proud of the fact that his farm built in 1812 and his surrounding acreage will be permanently protected from development in the future.

“Coming here and looking at birds and wildlife and being free of the city life let’s people see that land can be used for other things other than development,” emphasized Irwin who has been adding to his extensive set of trains with natural pine needles and other materials that he finds on his property.

Only trail in town

lb Irwin’s knowledge, his farm is the only one in Rappahannock to be so designated as an official Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail destination.

Former Governor Mark R. Warner was instrumental in the creation of these trails.

“Our vision of a statewide trail - the first of its kind in the United States - will truly open the door to the Commonwealth’s exquisite natural wonders,” said Warner in his preface to the “Discover our Wild Side” book in which Caledonia Farm is listed.
