Dominion Virginia Power has no “Plan B" for an imperiled transmission line proposal through the Piedmont that would serve Northern Virginia's growing demand for energy, a top company official admitted this week.
Failure to win multi-state approval for the project would force Dominion and its partner. Trail Co., back to the drawing board with little time to spare. Dominion Vice President for Electric Transmission John D. Smatlak said Monday during a Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCO hearing in Richmond.
The proposed line must be operating by summer 2011 to avoid blackouts in Northern Virginia, according to Dominion.
“We don’t have a ‘Plan B’ now to avoid” blackouts, “if we can't build this line,” Smatlak testified. “The plan we have now is to build this transmission hne.”
Dominion’s critics claim the utility wants the line to boost revenue by moving cheap electricity from coal-burning generators in Midwest to the energystarved Northeast.
The marathon SCC hearing will last at least two weeks and address a series of complex issues on the need and location of the proposed line.
