Rappahannock’s largest wrestler proved that he truly is the big man on campus.
On Saturday, RCHS heavyweight Jeremy Diley advanced to the VHSL Group A State Wrestling Championships with a surprise runner-up finish at the Region B Tournament.
“It’s definitely a great accomplishment for the kid,” RCHS coach Patrick Stroup said. “He wrestled exceptionally well, but I honestly I can’t say that I didn’t see it coming. Jeremy’s worked real hard over the past few months and he’s improved tremendously.”
Diley destroyed Wilson’s Leo Cancino in the opening round with a first-minute pin, and followed with a first round pin of Rob Dzuba of Riverheads in the semi-finals. Stroup called the thumping of Dzuba a huge win for his junior heavyweight, because Dzuba won the Southern Sectionals to advance to the Region B tournament.
“Jeremy looked real good in his first two matches,” Stroup said. “He won easily in the opening round, then pinned a district champion in the semis. It wasn’t an easy task.”
In the finals, Diley fell to Manassas Park’s Austin Wren for a second straight week. Wren pinned Diley in the finals of the Bull Run District Championships, and Saturday’s match had a similar result with Diley getting pinned in 3:35.
