If you’re caring for an aging family member in Rappahannock or one of its surrounding counties, you’re not alone. Locally, more than three-quarters of the care given to elders who need it comes from family members. Older spouses make up nearly half of the family caregivers who do this important job. Others - children, sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews - pitch in to help the aging people they love remain in the community.
Most spouses and families working in this way with their loved ones find it tremendously rewarding. Often, though, they worry that they’re not able to provide the kind of companionship that’s needed; or that theyVe too busy with other family needs. Sometimes they just need a break in their day to take care of business or in order to stay healthy and positive themselves.
Several Rappahannock families, as well as families from three other counties, have found support from DayBreak, a new regional Adult Day Healthcare program based in Culpeper. Caregivers have also taken advantage of the transportation to the program through the Rappahannock Rapidan
