Sumeytng <& Engineering Company in 1962 and was elected Genesee County Surveyor from t962~ 1966. The following year, he became the nation's only elected State Highway Commissioner and won reelection in I9*>t He was the first to build a cross-state interstate freeway. Interstate 94. and to establish the first highway exit numbering system in the country. The Welcome Center in Clare. Michigan is named in his honor.
When he left Congress. Mackie established Mackie Engineering in Lexington. KY and Charlottesville. VA He also served as Executive Vice President of Frankland & Lienhard Consulting Engineers. in New York City One of Mackie s proudest engineering accomplishments at that time was his involvement with the design and construction of the Luling Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Western Hemisphere at the time of its construction.
