Peanuts also need ground that is soft because hardpacked earth will drastically reduce crop yields.
Add organic material to clay soils and treat the ground with agricultural gypsum to loosen rock-hard ground
The temptation to add sand to the clay soils of Virginia should be avoided. When sand is mixed with clay, the result is something our western friends call adobe. Anything that makes good bricks doesn't make for good garden soil. Break up clay with organic matter and gypsum, and leave the sand for making mortar or adobe.
Once you have located a sunny spot of friable garden, plant your peanuts as soon as the ground is warming up in mid to late May because it takes four hot months to get a good crop of nuts. The soil has to be above 60 degrees for the nuts to sprout.
Either measure the ground temperature with a thermometer or wait for the soil to be warm enough to walk on it barefoot.

For people who don't want to give up space in the garden, peanuts can be grown in large pots. The peanut crop grown in a barrel or large clay pot won't be worth the effort for eating, but the amazing life cycle of the peanut can be observed up close
