counsel my clients to fight noise with noise. A closer noise will distract the listener from a more distant sound, so the simple act of installing a dripping water feature will be enough to tune out a neighbor’s whirring air conditioner.
Be certain to test the water feature before purchase to insure that the water does make enough noise to be heard from a distance of five to 10 feet. Insure that the fountain is as close to the outdoor seating area as possible and soon the highway noise will seem to move on down the road.
Screening unwanted vistas with plants is much easier than dealing with unwanted sound. Unfortunately, most homeowners make the matter worse by replacing one bad view with an uglier vision.
