deciduous screens make beautiful laceworks for snow without being looming, daunting walls of darkness.
Opening up the possibilities to deciduous plant material greatly increases the range of choices and brings the added bonus of flowers and ornamental fruits. The key point is to make the plant screen a thing of beauty and not just a utilitarian fence.
One trap to avoid is the planting of “50 uniformed soldiers in a row” thinking. Better to design screenings that mix several types of plants.
Choosing a single type of plant for a mass planting screen increases the chance of a single pest or disaster wiping out the screen — or, worse yet, creatine holes in the screen.
Replacing the dead specknens will be difficult because the surviving plants will have grown, and finding the appropriatesized replacements may be impossible or cost prohibitive.
