The plants are not spec tacular, and, to the casual visitor, may appear as if your garden has sprouted some over-eauberant clovei
The magic begins when the month-old plants begin to flower. The flowers, fast among the clover like leaves, are light yellow in color and attractive to bees.
Once pollinated, the flower grows a long root-liki appendage that points toward the ground like a divining rod in search of water. Before these life lines lower all the way to the soil, the gardener can carefully loosen the soil to allow the descending stem to enter the ground. Within a week or two, the descending stalk, called a peg. has bur rowed into the earth and at its hidden tip a nut will form
Flowers continue to bloom, become fertilized and send down pegs over several weeks so the “peg ging" can be enjoyed by th«
