We are not up to capacity by any means, but I am personally grateful, and can attest to the fact that returning volunteers and new trainees are sometimes available to run when needed. Just a bit over a week ago I became very ill and needed to be transported by the SVRS to Culpeper Hospital. I am grateful to EMT Stephanie Atkins who has returned as a volunteer and to Harold Bee bout, who is a relatively new ambulance driver. Their assessment resulted in the correct decision to get me to the ER, and I remained in the hospital for four days, recovering from a severe infection. We look forward to providing even more coverage when the current EMT class of 10 members completes its training in June!

celebrates a birthday, new novel
About 50 family members, friends and admirers gathered on the misty mountain on Sunday not only to celebrate James Russell’s 87th birthday, but also to ask him to sign copies of his third book, “Felicia.” Described as a novel, but with details drawn from the memories of his childhood conversations with his family and friends, this book deals with the sexual exploitation of AfricanAmerican women during the mid- 1800s. This descriptive novel is told in the first person, and in Mr. Russell’s characteristic style, conveys not only deep pain, but also a message of hope and respect.
