Celebrating 50 years
Last Thursday evening, the Lions Charter Night was held at Wakefield Country Day School. The event highlighted 50 years of service that the Lions have provided to Rappahannock County. Lions and their families and guests attended a wonderful gala where most of the past presidents of the Rappahannock Lions Club gladly assembled Uor a group shot. Washington’s Hal McDermott is shown receiving the Melvin Jones plaque for Outstanding Lions participation from Lions District Governor Joe Volpe. Hal is , only the second person in the Rappahannock Club’s history to have been selected for this treasured award. Chairman of the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors and Lion Bob Anderson proudly stands next to charter member and golden lion Ray Cannon who has been a stalwart volunteer for 50 years. With over 50 members, the Lions are often seen throughout the year volunteering their sen/ices with the mobile van that offers hearing and sight testing for Rappahannock’s students, helping out with the county's scouts and 4-H groups, and at the annual Camp Fantastic for children with cancer as well as Relay for Life. Toast and biscuits wouldn’t be the same without their tasty apple butter which sells out most years and the county's musically talented youth are featured each year when the Lions sponsor the Annual Bland Concert.
