“Wo got donations," Brown explained, “from people who live here, from those who just own property, or have some connection to the county. We got a check once from a guy from Indiana who was driving through and saw the flier."
The name Jeff Brown is, of course, synonymous with the Christmas program, but he credits former Rappahannock chief deputy Rick McWelch with providing the knowhow to get started. “He knew the ins and outs of this type* of prognun" and led the way, said the captain.
Jeff Brown thus retires from a career in law enforcement that began when the state was hiring game wardens in 1971. But the uniform will not be put in moth balls, not just yet. Capt. Brown will do some part-time work in law enforcement, And you can expect him to be going shopping next Christmas with those young girls and boys.
One of the speakers at the retirement party was Evelyn Partlow, who worked alongside Jeff Brown both in the Front Royal police department and in the Rappahannock Sheriff's Office. She said that “everybody wanted to work with Jeff, because he was gentle and laid back, very kind to everybody.” Then* was yet another round of applause* for Jeff Brown.
