The title character, Elah. the woodsman’s son - played by Matt Ballinger, a stage actor also from New York - is doomed to repeat the sins of the father as he too, falls in love, this time with the moon’s daughter, Alicia.

Originally, Mulyani had considered Sleepy Hollow in upstate New York as a location, but through Maazel’s son Orson, she met Maazel herself who invited Mulyani to Rappahannock.

“It’s more beautiful here,” said Mulyani.

Mulyani’s version of the myth takes place in 18th century England. and Rappahannock becomes, for a while, the North Yorkshire of Bronte Wordsworth. None of the actors are English, but all manage to pull off a convincing Yorkshire lilt, even little Jenna, 5, and Kayla Robey, 10, (both of Castleton) the two local girls who play Selene’s daughter Alicia in her different childhood incarnations, and Andrew Hitt, 4, of Sperryville who plays a young Elah.
