When Mr. Pagano’s letter
appeared in the Jan. 22 issue of the Rappahannock News, I felt it attacked not only my beliefs, but also those of many other Christians. I was the only one who came forward to express feelings on the topic, however I do not believe I am the only one who holds the sentiments I expressed in my first letter published in the Jan. 29 issue.
I did not say anything negative about the Unitarian Church. My point was if people feel the forming of the Unitarian Church is am anti Christian scandal, they should look at other things in our midst that they really might take issue with.
As a Christian, American, I respect the right of others to believe differently than I. If you are Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Wiccan, Gaian, etc., you are welcome to be my friend. You are welcome and free to worship as you choose. I do not, however, intend to ever abandon the Christian founding and long Christian heritage of this great country. The United States was founded as one nation, under God, inclusive of God. The Ten Commandments belong in the courts, schools, and anywhere else we choose to display them. Prayer belongs on the football field, at graduations, on the basketball court and anywhere and any time anyone wants to pray. The creche belongs in public locations. The United States is not a Christian nation because our government decrees it, but because Christian is what we are!
Believing that you know the truth about something and “sticking to your guns” for what you believe, does . not make you a bigot. Believing you are right about something to the point that you negate not only someone else’s belief but also their very right to believe what they choose, makes you a bigot. Not believing in absolute truth makes you a liberal.
