With the county anticipating less revenue from the state, the board and McCarthy are looking for ways to pare down next fiscal year’s budget.
Fletcher raised issues concerning accessibility and parking for the older building and suggested that these concerns are better accommodated at the Bank Road site.
But McCarthy told the Rappahannock News that overall, the county would be saving money, and that he believes a fair market price had been negotiated.
“We’ve wanted to get hold of it for a long time,” said McCarthy. “The county has the opportunity to get it for a lot less than we could build a new office for.”
Fair market value for a commercial space, continued McCarthy, is a lot more difficult to determine than residential - there is more turnover and more reference points from which to gauge the market value - and ultimately, the value of a building comes down to a willing seller and a walling buyer.
