A bill that would exempt college students from jury duty passed the House Feb. 3 and is being considered by a Senate committee.
The bill provides an exemption for full-time students who attend accredited public or private institutions of higher learning while school is in session.
“The bill saves time in trying to commute from school to a trial” said the bill’s sponsor, Del. Thomas Gear (R-Hampton).
Gear said students should be focusing on their schoolwork rather than jury duty, which can last for months.
“With this proposal, students are able to request an exemption from jury duty except during the summer,”
