Diley gained the advantage with backpoints to put him ahead 5-0 in the second period. Ward’s only points came from escapes to end the match 8-2.
As his advancement to finals began to sink in, Diley said, “I just can’t explain it,” giving a slight, nervous smile.
That finals’ match found Diley facing a formidable opponent, Mathews’ Garrett Fosdyck. Fosdyck is the first Single A wrestler from the state to medal at the Cadet Nationals at Fargo, N.D. in Freestyle competition according to Intermat Wrestle’s Jason Bryant. Fosdyck’s yearround training earned him a 30-1 season record going into the state finals’ match with Diley.
