Richard had a strong will to live and friends jokingly commented about how conventional weapons, or medicine, seemed incapable of killing him.
Richard did not know that his friend Claudia Mitchell had died this week, the family said.
Richard and Roy grew up in Laredo, Texas on the border of Mexico just across the Rio Grande River. They spoke Spanish as well as English, and Richard came to admire much of Spanish life and culture.
After graduating from George Washington University in 1960, Richard then spent two years in Argentina earning an international law degree.
