In 1607 Virginia was settled; in 1833 Rappahannock county was formed; on February 9, 1950 Rappahannock stores had ShenValley meats in their counters. Meats grown in Rappahannock, processed in a meat plant partially owned by Rappahannock farmers,, and then offered to Rappahannock consumers hy Rappahannock stores.

While we don’t kuow howmany of our stores are'handling' Shen-Valley brands and don’t mean to be slighting anyone, we do know that Lea Bros, at Washington, James Atkins at Sperryville, and Lyle Rector at Flint Hill have it—try it. And. . .well, what do you know—in popped some more news about ShenValley.

The first week in February they sold 302,000 pounds of products, killed 1167 head of hogs and 32 head of cattie; manufactured 10,000 pounds of sausage and 25,000 pounds I of sliced bacon. /

Roll on, wheels of progress, roll on!

Just recenty the county agent and Bill Saville, the assistant agent along with 48 other agents and specialists spent a day at Shen-Valley. We saw a type demonstration in hogs on foot, grading demonstration in the carcass followed by a cutting demonstration. What did it all add up to? Well the hogs weighed the same on foot but one graded top and the other graded bottom—in the end the top grade hog produced cuts worth $33.43 and the low grade frog produced cuts worth $36.92, proving that all hogs weighing the same are not of the same , value. Conclusion, Mr. Farmer? Produce quality and you get paid for it at Shen-Valley.

Quality can be had throughproper breeding and feeding.

Coming to Washington one night last weel? and as I walked to the car from my home, I noticed the heavens reddened over Turkey Mountain. As I approached Washington I could tell the fire was over and beyond Pine Knot. N’o siren had been heard— could hardly bo a home or a building—then the burning hillsides came in view! The broomsedge fires have started again and so I was reminded of a poem road recently which had impressed me.
