He was born in Winchester.
He is an American aviator, ex-t plorer and naval officer.
He was educated at the Shenandoah Valley Academy, Virginia Military Institute, the University of Virginia and the United States Naval Academy.
In 1925 he went to Greenland with the MacMillan expedition
In the fall of 1928 he started on a scientific expedition to the Antarctic lands and seas.
On May 9, 1926 he flew in a Fokker monoplane from Spitsbergen to the North Pole.
In July 1927 he attempted to fly across the Atlantic ocean to Paris but the flyers were lost in etorms and fog over France.
The flight has been called the "successful failure.”
He flew over the South Pole in November, 1929.
Congress raised him to the rank of Rear Admiral.
He headed a second expedition in 1933 and 1934, to conduct a scientific survey of the Antarctic.

The Sperryville boys played the Marshall boys on Monday evening, February 13. The Marshall boys won with a score of 47-23.
The Sperryville and Luray boys played at Luray Tuesday evening February 7. The Luray boys won.
Glee GlubPractice
The Glee Club practiced under the direction of Miss Wood. The group is learning to sing “Pledge Allegiance", "Baa, Baa, Baa” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.’’ Miss Lucy Mae Smith accompanied the group on the piano.
