George Washington

George Washington, born in 1732, took the oath of office as the first president of the United States in 1789, ha\ing been unanimously chosen, under the new Constitution, to fill that office. He was re-elected and served until 1797. Though urged to accept the nomination for a third term, he declined, and retired from public life to Mount Vernon in Virginia.

In his farewell address to the people, he pointed out the improtance of the right selection of a man to fill the most important office of the United States government—that of President.

George Washington’s life is not complete unless his character is included. Thomas Jefferson, describes Washington as having a great and powerful mind, strong penetration, he gained from his council of war, he selected what,he thought was the best for his country from the suggestions he received from friends. No general has ever been known to plan his battles more wisely, he did not fear war, meeting personal dangers with the calmest unconcern.

Perhaps the strongest features in his character was prudence and his pure honesty.

On a whole his character was perfect, it has been said that never did nature and fortune combine more perfectly to make a man great, and to place him in such a place that he should be known and recognized as a man having everlasting remembrance.

For his was the reward and merit of leading his country successfully through a war which was fought to win its independence; of running its councils through the birth of a government, new to the world in its forms and principles until it had settled down into a quiet and orderly nation, and of obeying the laws through the whole of his career, private and military, of which the' history of the world furnished none who are greater.
