Wildlife Week
Governor John S. Battle has issued an executive statement setting aside the week of March 1925 as Wildlife Restoration Week in Virginia.
“As springtime approaches," said the mindful governor, “we are reminded again of the glories of nature and of all the living things that make the outdoors what it is. Our wildlife in particular enjoys a new freshness, a new lite to begin all over again the processes of a promising existence." t
"Our wildlife is endangered,” ■said the Governor, “and we mud forever be on guard against the forces of destruction which would dissipate it. As Governor of Virginia, therefore, I urge every citizen in the Commonwealth to take an active part in conservation work aimed at the restoration of this great and wonderful heritage. I am pleased to announce the week of March 19 to 25, inclusive, as Wildlife Restoration Week in Virginia, and strongly i rge that these days be observed by providing suitable food and cover and living places for our wildlife.” • *
The Governor further urged that sportsmen, organized outdoor clubs, civic bodies, landowners, youth groups —fell —to particularly unite their efforts aimed at wildlife rehabilitation School officials and teachers, and their /pupils,- can profit immeasurably by devoting some' of their time to the study of wildlife conservation.
State Game Commission officials are "pleased with Governor Battle’s message and are anxious to coopepat?"-rn every way possible to make ‘Wildlife Week’ a
success. Here ai)4 some wildlife activities they recommend during this period:
1. Make wildlife food plantings of lespedezas, millet, combine milo and other bird mixtures and grasses along field borders and fence rows.
2. Refrain from burning fence lines, ditch banks and strips near wooded areas.
3. Practice contour farming and strip cropping and leave small areas for food patches fbr wildlife wherever possible. - 4. Assist in carrying out programs of conservation education. Conduct classroom forums, plan group meetinfi8, prepare display material and discuss conservation.
