Bovine Diet Varies
From Earlier Days
The menu for today's dairy cow has varied considerably from the earlier menus, and now can include such things as peanut hay and rubber seed meal.
N'. R. Thompson, dairy researcher at Virginia Experiment Station, who has been investigating what a cow can eat and turn into milk, says test cows not only ate peanut hay with relish, but produced a3 much milk as from alfalfa hay. Even the rare feed, rubber seed meal from Brazil, gave good results.
Dried apple pomace, a by-product from cider making and apparently useless, was of some value as a feed for cows. Likewise, cull apples were About half as valuable as corn sgilae.
Peanut meal was found to be a slightly better feed for dairy cows than either cottonseed meal or soybean meal. Dried sweet potatoes were found to contain almost as much food value for dairy cows as ground yellow corn.
Clover silage, preserved with the help of molasses, proved to be a first class feed; and korean lespedeza and lespedeza sericea hay, though inferior to alfalfa, were useful.
